Indian space startup Skyroot Launches Vikram-1 Aerospace launched the country's first privately developed orbital rocket on Saturday, marking a milestone in India's push to compete for a larger share of the rapidly growing global commercial launch market.
The Vikram-1 rocket lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota at 0635 GMT, leaving behind a plume of fire and smoke as it carried several customer payloads and in-orbit experiments on its maiden orbital mission, officially named Mission Aagaman. The rocket successfully delivered its payload into a 450km orbit approximately 15 minutes after launch, completing what the company described as a grand success.
The launch had initially been planned for 0600 GMT but was put on hold temporarily before being rescheduled. Despite the delay, the mission achieved all its primary objectives.
A Historic First for Indian Private Space
The successful orbital insertion made India the third country in the world to achieve orbital launch capability through private enterprise, a landmark that reflects how quickly the country's commercial space sector has matured since it was opened to private investment just five years ago.
Skyroot was founded in 2018 and has grown rapidly since then, becoming the first space sector company in India to reach a valuation of $1 billion earlier this year. It had previously demonstrated its capabilities with the Vikram-S mission in 2022, which became the first privately developed rocket to reach space from Indian soil on a suborbital flight. Saturday's mission takes that achievement significantly further, graduating from a suborbital hop to a fully orbital insertion with paying customers aboard.
"Mission Aagaman is a grand success. This is a test flight. We will be doing a few of these before we move into routine commercial flights."
The company's statement captured both the scale of what was achieved and the disciplined caution that comes with being at the early stages of building a reliable commercial launch service.
What Vikram-1 Carries and How It Works
Standing approximately 22 metres tall, Vikram-1 is designed to carry payloads of up to 350kg into low-Earth orbit. The rocket uses three solid-fuel stages and a liquid-fuel orbital adjustment module powered by a 3D-printed engine, technologies the company says are being flown for the first time in India.
The mission is carrying several experimental and customer payloads from Indian and overseas organisations, including technology demonstration satellites and in-orbit experiments. Beyond delivering those payloads, the mission is designed to validate the rocket's propulsion, avionics, telemetry, guidance, navigation and control systems under real flight conditions, generating data that will inform the development of future commercial launches.
The use of 3D-printed engine components is particularly significant. Additive manufacturing has become a defining feature of the new generation of launch vehicle developers globally, offering faster production cycles, reduced costs and greater design flexibility than traditional manufacturing methods.
India's Private Space Sector Opens Up
India opened its space sector to private investment in 2020, allowing startups to build rockets, satellites and launch services for the first time. For decades, those activities had been the exclusive domain of the government's Indian Space Research Organisation, which built the country's launch infrastructure and managed all orbital missions from the state.
The liberalisation created the conditions for a new wave of startups, of which Skyroot is among the most prominent. The company has attracted backing from global investors who see India's combination of engineering talent, lower labour costs and growing domestic demand as a compelling platform for building competitive launch services.
Skyroot is among a new generation of Indian space companies seeking to challenge incumbents in the small satellite launch market, where Elon Musk's SpaceX currently holds a dominant position through its Falcon 9 vehicle and Transporter rideshare programme. Governments across Europe and Asia have stepped up support for domestic launch companies in recent years, driven by the desire to secure independent access to space as both commercial and defence demand continues to grow.
India Eyes a Bigger Share of the Global Space Economy
The government's ambitions for the sector are substantial. India currently accounts for roughly $8 billion of the global space economy and has set a target of growing that figure to $44 billion by 2033. Achieving that goal will require the country's private sector to win a meaningful share of the international launch market, competing directly with established players in the United States, Europe and China.
Saturday's launch suggests that ambition is not merely aspirational. With Vikram-1 now having demonstrated orbital capability, Skyroot moves into a phase of further test flights before transitioning to routine commercial operations. Each successful mission will build the track record that paying customers, particularly international ones, will need to see before committing their satellites to an Indian private launch vehicle.
For a country that spent decades building its space capability entirely through state institutions, the sight of a privately built rocket delivering payloads to orbit from Indian soil represents a genuine turning point.
